Once again the time has come for our Consortium family to come together to join in friendly contest for guardianship of the Chalice. So bring your fighters, artisans, and performers and come join the fray.
The populace is invited to come to site as early as 9 am on September 18th and set up their pavilions. To allow travel time for members, armor inspection will begin at noon, and the fighting will begin at 1 pm. THL Michael von Moltan will be in charge of martial activities. Similarly, those wishing to place an entry into the Static Arts & Sciences competition may submit their entries beginning at noon, with judging to begin at 1pm. Participants for the Performing Arts competition are asked to sign in at Information Point; Performing Arts may be judged throughout the day to allow for participation by people also involved in fighting. Sayyida Zada Orlenda will be in charge of the Arts & Sciences activities.
How It All Works
Chalice Challenge: Competition Rules and Information
- In order to streamline and equate the scoring system of Chalice, all four contests (Champions Tourney, Group Melees, Static Arts and Performing Arts) have been adjusted to produce the same number of points toward the overall Chalice score.
- The Chalice points awarded the highest scores in each contest shall be:
- 1st Place = 5 points,
- 2nd Place = 3 points and
- 3rd Place = 1 point.
- Within each contest, the contest points gained by each group or representative of each group are varied, but no matter how many contest points are awarded, the resulting Chalice points gained are determined by #2 above.
Further, if for some reason an individual contest must be modified, the resulting Chalice points gained are still determined by #2 above.
The contests shall be judged as follows:
- Champion’s Tourney - Each group within the Consortium may send forth one person to represent their Shire. This person must be a member in good standing of their Shire (see Mercenaries) and willing to represent the Consortium for one full year as their Champion should such need arise. If for some reason this individual cannot fulfill his or her duties, the responsibility shall fall upon the person who finished second.
A fighter winning a bout in the Champion’s Tourney shall receive points equal to his or her fallen opponents rank. The rank is as follows:
- 4 points - Peer (Royal or Bestowed)
- 3 points - Squire
- 2 points - Non-Belted Fighter (of any type)
Points shall be totaled for each fighter who participates in the Tourney and overall Chalice points awarded to his or her group based on the system listed in #2 above.
- Group Melee - Each Consortium group may send forth a number of fighters to represent their Shire so that their point total will not exceed 15. This number is determined by totaling the value of each fighter by the following chart:
- 4 points - Peer (Royal or Bestowed)
- 3 points - Squire
- 2 points - Non-Belted Fighter (of any type)
Any additional fighters can be substituted between fights if so desired. In a case by case basis, a fighter can be substituted during a fight due to injury or other unforeseen complication. In no case is the total value of the team to exceed 15 points.
Scoring is made by totaling up the value of all opponents killed during the bout. At the end of the fights, totals from all fights are added together and the resulting ranks are awarded points as in #2 above.
Notes on Mercenaries:
Mercenaries - For the sake of Chalice Challenge, a mercenary is defined as someone who is not a member of the group they are representing. A group member is one who is a regular participant in a group’s activities; attending an occasional fighter practice, etc does NOT make one a regular part of that group.
For example, if a group were to use a mercenary (see above), that group would not be eligible for points in the whichever contest the mercenary was used. That group would still be eligible for points in the other contests provided that no mercenary is used in them.
Mismatched Teams - No official provision is made to ‘equalize’ teams in melee competition (or any Chalice contest)
Draws/Ties - In the case of a tie between teams in the fighting contests, a one fight ‘playoff’ will be held. In the case of the Champion’s Tourney, the two fighters will face each other until a clear victor is determined. In the case of the Melees, the two teams will fight until there are no members of one group standing.
- Static Arts - Each Shire in the Consortium is allowed up to 5 entries in the Static Arts Contest.
- Performing Arts - Each Shire in the Consortium is allowed up to 5 entries in the Performing Arts competition. The rules are identical to those of the Static Arts contest with appropriate changes (substitute Performing Arts for Static Arts)
- At the end of all contests, all score sheets should be given to the Warden or his/her representative for totaling. The Warden will then determine who has won the Chalice by earning the highest number of points.
In the event of a tie between two Shires, the Warden will summon a council of Seneschals (or representatives thereof) and explain the situation. The seneschals of the two (or more) affected groups will then be excused from this meeting and admonished not to reveal the nature of the problem. The remaining Shires and Warden will then work out by discussion and vote which of the groups has shown the most determination to win, the greatest chivalry, and the most contribution to Chalice. This tie breaker was implemented to allow the concept of ‘intangibles’ rather than brute force to determine the winner
Consortium Taxes
Once yearly, the Consortium Hidage (taxes) is collected on a strictly voluntary basis, and is utilized as a fundraiser for the Kingdom. Tax amounts are based on the hypothetical estates of the nobility of the Consortium, formulated according to SCA rank and offices, and created in Anglo-Norman land/tax traditions.
Hides are calculated as follows:
- 6 hides - Birthright
- 6 hides - for each Award of Arms, Baronial Award, and/or Shire Award
- 12 hides - for each Grant of Arms and/or Barony
- 18 hides - Peerage
- 36 hides - County
- 72 hides - Duchy
- 1 hides - for each Local Office
- 2 hides - for each Kingdom Office
- 3 hides - for each Society Office
